Understanding the Teammate Assessment Quiz

Assessing our own abilities can be challenging, especially when it comes to evaluating ourselves as teammates. For some, the results of the Teammate Assessment quiz can be a real eye-opener.

As outlined in The WE Gear, good teammates are A.L.I.V.E. (Active, Loyal, Invested, Viral, and Empathetic). The Teammate Assessment quiz analyzes participants’ aptitude for practicing these five behaviors, as well as their overall capacity to engage in teamwork.

Here are the criteria for each category:

ACTIVE is not standing idly by and waiting for something to happen. Active is taking the initiative to do what needs to be done. Active teammates are people of action. They don’t turn a blind eye to problems, and they don’t abdicate responsibility by accepting defeat with “It is what it is.” They act. Active teammates confront toxic behaviors and demonstrate courage.
LOYAL is honoring commitments. Loyal is demonstrating a clear allegiance to the team and its various members. Loyal teammates prioritize their teams. They don’t abandon ship as soon as the seas get rough. Loyal teammates don’t gossip, nor do they discuss team business with those not on the team. Loyal teammates don’t form cliques. Loyal teammates are faithful.

INVESTED is connecting individual success to team success. Few things create stronger bonds between teammates than taking a sincere interest in each other. Invested teammates know the minutiae of their fellow teammates’ lives. Invested teammates see their teammates’ failures as their failures. Invested teammates are aware of their leaders’ values.

VIRAL is being cognizant of emotional contagion. Viral teammates understand the effect their mood has on those around them and how the repercussions of their actions spread through their team. Viral teammates are energetic. They use their enthusiasm for their team to influence the other members of teams. Viral teammates are passionate about their teams.

EMPATHETIC is attempting to understand what it is like to be in someone else’s situation. Empathetic is asking why before passing judgment. Empathetic teammates create a safe environment for teammates to consider issues from different viewpoints. They respect their teammates perspectives and go to great lengths to make others feel at ease in their presence.
COMPREHENSIVE is an all-encompassing category that covers the capacity to care, share, and listen. Good teammates are not jealous of their teammates’ individual success. Good teammates listen to their leaders’ instructions and their fellow teammates’ concerns. They practice humility, are eager to serve, and always choose the option that is best for their team.

Becoming a better teammate begins with a desire to want to get better and a willingness to seek understanding. You may naturally be better at some of the above behaviors than others.

You may be more inclined to be loyal than to be active. You may be more inclined to be empathetic than to be viral. The goal is to score high in all the categories. Showing a deficiency in one area means you must put greater effort into mastering that behavior than you do the others.

But know that mastering all the categories is possible!
