The English word “gift” comes from the Proto-Germanic word geftiz, which means “that which is given.”

Etymologists, experts who study the evolution of words, point out that the noun form of gift was originally only used in the context of marriage, meaning a “dowry.” A bride’s family was expected to provide a “gift” to the groom and his family in the form of money, goods, or land.

This offering was intended to enhance the bride’s desirability for marriage but also served as a conditional form of protection for the bride against the very real possibility of ill treatment by her future husband and his family.

It wasn’t until the 14th century that the sense of gift as a “special talent” began to appear in literature.

Good teammates are undeniably gifted. They possess talents that make them valuable members of their teams. Their gifts enhance their desirability and their teams’ success.

Here’s a list of the 7 gifts of a good teammate:

1. Trustworthiness – They keep their word, maintain confidentiality, and can be relied on in all situations. A good teammate can be trusted.

2. Communication – They actively listen, share ideas clearly, and keep everyone in the loop. A good teammate is an effective communicator.

3. Supportiveness – They uplift others, offer help when needed, and celebrate team successes. A good teammate conveys unwavering support to those struggling.

4. Accountability – They take responsibility for their actions and own up to mistakes without blame-shifting. A good teammate possesses the humility to be held accountable.

5. Adaptability – They remain flexible during change, stay open-minded, and adjust to new roles or challenges. A good teammate facilitates progress by being adaptable.

6. Positivity – They bring constructive energy, encourage others, and help maintain a can-do attitude. A good teammate inspires hope by projecting a positive attitude and maintaining positive body language.

7. Collaboration – They prioritize team success over personal ego, share credit, and work well with diverse personalities. A good teammate is willing to contribute more than required and/or less than desired whenever necessary.

Etymologists also point out that English speakers didn’t start using the word gift as a verb (i.e. to gift someone with something) until the early 1600s. As mentioned above, good teammates are undeniably gifted. But what makes them extraordinary is their ability to selflessly gift their talents to their teams.

Ironically, surrounding yourself with good teammates is a gift you give yourself.

As always…Good teammates care. Good teammates share. Good teammates listen. Go be a good teammate.
